We are very pleased to inform you that we have now released an update to our Atlas software. We have concentrated our efforts on performance and other essentials to help ALS staff with their daily tasks. We hope that you find our new/updated features useful.
The learner page now features funding criteria flags on the learner page for both EHCP and EHCP(Non HNS).
We have added a 'remaining estimate' budget calculation to the learner page and also relabelled remaining budget so that both actual and estimates are shown clearly.
We have reintroduced the Scheduler tool to ease the setting up of support items.
Exporting to Excel - the Export button will now export all records, not just current display.
Continuous loading on Audit now resolved
Earnings Adjustment report timeout issue resolved
Student Start Date now appearing in Edit Learner page
Funding Criteria applicable now field not reacting correctly

We have added start and end dates to all lists and types, this will mean when selecting drop down options these will now only appear if the start and end dates are in the year/date range selected in the date selector.

SpirALS Update 16/17

SpirALS version 1.95 is a major update designed to work with ALS information for the 2016/17 academic year onwards.
There were changes to the ILR structure for the academic year 2016/2017 and SpirALS was revised to accommodate all major changes
Updated LLDD Values
The LLDD ILR Values have been updated in co-ordination with the 2016/2017 Academic year
New Licence System
This version of SpirALS now contains our new licencing system. You will need to contact us after updating to Spirals version 1.95 in order to get your licence key.
Import from Another Data File
This feature has been changed to now show you the filters from the other data file, and the filters correctly run on that data file. This allows you to more easily manage what learners you want to pull through into your file from the older one.
Details of further minor updates/versions
Fixed a bug on the Local Authority High Needs Cost Form reports which caused the S139 tick box to be ticked erroneously and show the wrong assessment date.
Bug fix which fixed a bug that occurred when closing the settings screen.
All the new features can be found in the latest version of SpirALS, version 1.95, which can be downloaded from the updates page.
SpirALS MS Access 2010 update issue

It has come to our attention that during this week's patches released by microsoft, patch KB3085515 was released for the Access 2010 and the Office 2010 suite.This patch updates a reference used by SpirALS and because of this whenever users will open SpirALS they will be greeted with a checkrefs error.
Microsoft have been made aware of this issue but unfortunately have not provided us with any information on when they expect this to be fixed by. Because of this we highly reommend that KB3085515 is uninstalled from SpirALS client machines to instantly resolves the issue.

SpirALS 1.94 Update

We have updated SpirALS to accommodate changes to the ILR specification for the 2015/16 academic year. Further details of the SpirALS 1.94 update (and how to install it) can be found on our updates page.
For the 15/16 academic year, some changes have been made to the ILR that affect the way LLDD values are recorded.
Traditionally, each learner had one Disability (DS) value and one Learning Difficulty (LD) value, each from separate lists. Of course, in the real world there is nothing to stop someone having more than one disability/learning difficulty, so most SpirALS users like to use our ‘Support Needs’ to record more accurate information, and no doubt will continue to do so.
The ILR has been amended structurally, so (a) both Disability and Learning Difficulty lists have been consolidated into one LLDD and Health Problem list and (b) each learner can have multiple LLDD and Health Problem values. Furthermore, one of these values (for each learner) can be marked as a ‘primary’.
In SpirALS Version 1.94 we have changed the way we record the LLDD and Health Problem values to reflect this change; you can now assign multiple values to each student and mark one as a primary.
In order to make this information easier for you to input into SpirALS, we have made a change to the SpirALS DataLink routine. If you wish to import this information, please read our What changes need to be made to the DataLink document.
Additionally, we have added a new field for you to record the 'Special Educational Needs' (or 'SEN') values for those students who have special educational needs at a lower level than those with an EHC plan or an LDA but still need special educational provision with their learning.
All the new features can be found in the latest version of SpirALS, version 1.94, which can be downloaded from the updates page.

This new version of TEAM allows specified users to edit their students' assessment details from inside the TEAM application.
This latest version of TEAM has a number of key additions as well as fixes for all reported issues to date. You can find full details of the changes we have made to this version of TEAM in our "What's new in TEAM 1.09" document.
TEAM 1.09 is designed to work with SpirALS 1.93 onwards, so please ensure your version of SpirALS is updated to version 1.93 when you update TEAM. You can update SpirALS from the SpirALS updates page. TEAM can be updated at this update page.

In this update, we introduce the eagerly anticipated "Monthly Cost Breakdown" report. This report shows a breakdown of costs by month based on the start and end date for actual Support Cost Items.
We have also introduced a new version of our "SFA Earnings Adjustment" report which is based on actual costs rather than estimates.

SpirALS Update Version 1.92F Released!

A new academic year approaches and we’re putting the finishing touches to the first major SpirALS release of 14/15.
Meanwhile, we’ve released SpirALS version 1.92F so that you can enjoy some of the new features right now.
For the first time it is now possible to import student information from other SpirALS data files; particularly useful for importing returning students.
The SpirALS Report Manager now contains a 'Favourite Reports' feature that allows you to mark the reports that you use most frequently, making it much easier to find the reports you need and use most often.
In addition, 1.92F comes with 28 new reports. Every report showing support cost information now has both an ‘Actual’ and ‘Estimated’ version.

After studying many different Local Authority forms, we have designed a new multiple-page report based on the ‘model standard form’ recommended by the Education Funding Agency. The report includes common information requested by Local Authorities in respect of student details, anticipated support and costs.
This report is available in latest release of SpirALS, version 1.92 D, along with other improvements and fixes.
This update supersedes all previous versions and we recommend you arrange to install it at your earliest convenience.

Workshop Presentation at the NAMSS Annual Conference 2014

'Forward planning in the new funding climate' is the title of the NAMSS workshop presented by Carol Miles, Director of Midas Systems, in collaboration with Kim Greenfield, Head of Learning Support at Guildford College. The workshop will be held on the first day of the NAMSS conference (March 17th).

Midas Systems is pleased to announce the latest release of SpirALS version 1.92.
SpirALS version 1.92 is a major update designed to work with ALS information for the 2013/2014 academic year. This update supersedes all previous versions and we recommend you arrange to install them at your earliest convenience.
There have been major changes to the funding guidance for the academic year 2013/2014 and SpirALS has been revised with this in mind. There are also some significant changes for colleges using TEAM.
New ILR and funding related fields
Version 1.92 facilitates the recording of all data relevant to the current ALS funding methodologies (such as that related to Workplace Learning, Educational Health Care Plan and Adult Learning Loans/Bursaries).
Existing fields now include new ILR values for 2013/2014 and a new field has been introduced to identify the source of each Learner’s ALS funding. Furthermore, the Funding Fields Auto-update and DataLink facilities have been updated to help users rapidly populate these new fields.
Detailed information about the changes to SpirALS’ funding related fields can be found on the SpirALS online help file.
New filtering and reporting options
The new fields introduced in this update are available in both the Saved Filter Manager and the Query Export Manager.
The Saved Filter Manager also now supports filters based on values that are greater or less than a user specified value or that fall within a user specified range of values. For example, it is now possible to create a filter that returns students that have a total cost between £5,500 and £6,000.
In addition, SpirALS’ Funding tiers have been brought in line with figures relevant to the new funding methodologies. Used alongside the Local Authority criteria, these filters will allow you to print the new Local Authority Cost Forms for high needs students.
Improved support for covering Support Programmes (for colleges using TEAM)
SpirALS users are now able to specify TEAM users that are allowed to ‘cover’ (and enter information on) sessions of other members of staff. It is also possible to specify which Support Programmes are ‘coverable’. Note: TEAM users must be using TEAM version 1.08 to take advantage of this feature.
In version 1.92, it is now possible to record additional fields (for example ‘Cost Centre’) on Support Programmes so this information can be added to Support Cost Items when created via the Cost Calculator.

Based in our offices in Brentford, West London, the job would suit a newly qualified teacher, a person with experience of delivering learning support in a college or an IT trainer.
The post requires an enthusiastic person who would enjoy providing customer support; and designing and delivering training, to meet the needs of our 3000 customers using the company’s systems.
Familiarity with MS Office applications such as Word, Excel and Access is preferred. Comprehensive training on use of the company’s bespoke software (currently SpirALS and TEAM) will be provided.

Local Authority information added to SpirALS

Learning support funding in Further Education is changing in 2013/14. Support costs over £6000 will now be the responsibility of the local authority of high needs learners up to age 24 with a Learning Difficulty Assessment.

SpirALS version 1.91 released

Midas Systems is pleased to announce the latest release of SpirALS, version 1.91.
This update supersedes all previous versions and we recommend you arrange to install it at your earliest convenience as it contains improvements designed to support recent amendments to the ILR and transition from YPLA to EFA.
Among a host of features to improve the user experience in general, added features include:
New EFA Cost Form report
New Target & ALS Outcome reports
New ILR Field Maintenance screens
The SpirALS update and all documentation can be downloaded from our website (www.midas-systems.co.uk/update). Here, you will also find “Installation instructions”, “What’s New” and “Troubleshooting” documentation along with information on all the latest changes and features.
We suggest that all users take a few minutes to read the “What’s New” document to familiarise themselves with the changes introduced in this version.

Colleges of Further Education are being asked for learning support information from Local Education Authorities.
We have prepared a custom query we can send to you by email to obtain the information from SpirALS. Please see below for details.
In order to help you gather this information we have made a custom query to export: Student Name, Date of Birth, Age Band, Postcode and Estimated or Actual costs (limited to over £5500 if desired). The query can also include whether or not the student has an S139a assessment, however we need to individually tailor this query as it can be recorded either as an L29 value, or in the Assessments tab.
If you are a SpirALS user and would like a copy of the custom query send an email request to: email@example.com
Please indicate whether you would like to include S139a assessments (and where you record this) and Actual or Estimated costs, also if you would like to limit the query to only show those students with costs over £5500.
New telephone system

On Friday the 14thSeptember Midas Systems will be moving over to a new internet based telephone system, which we hope will give us a number of new facilities and greater flexibility.
The change involves transferring our main number 020 8847 0214 from BT to the new provider. This should be a seamless process, however it is possible that our phone system will be down for a short period at some stage on this day.
During the switchover, you can continue to email us at: Info@midas-systems.co.uk and if there is a problem getting through on the usual number you should be able to call us on this temporary line: 0560 367 0612.
Once our number is successfully transferred it will mean we can provide you with an even better service, however we do ask you to bear with us as we familiarise ourselves with the new phone facilities.
Just to be clear, our phone and Fax numbers remain the same: Please continue to call us on 020 8847 0214, or Fax on 020 8569 7297.
We do hope that this change does not inconvenience you unduly and thank you in advance for your understanding.

Midas Systems are pleased to announce the latest release of SpirALS, Version 1.9 F (vi).
This update corrects the problems identified in the initial release of version 1.9F which we announced at the end of June. We apologise for any inconvenience that the delay in releasing this update may have caused you.

Please note: This version contains routines designed to correct the details of Support Cost Items that were previously created or updated using the TEAM Support Programme Validator. These issues do not affect the total cost amounts in any way however in certain circumstances the Cost Items may have picked up incorrect descriptions for Hourly rates, or incorrect Start / End dates.
If you have used the Support Programme Validator to create / update Cost Items we strongly recommend that you use the Support Program Validator to re-check all Support Programmes and then use the “Create / Update Cost items” button on the Tools & Test Summary tab, to create / update all of the Cost Items linked to the Support Programmes. This will ensure that your cost items correctly reflect the Support Programme details.

Please note: As SpirALS and TEAM are constantly being improved we strongly recommend that you only download the files when you are ready to perform an update. This ensures that you get the most up to date and functional version possible.

Furthermore, SpriALS TEAM administrators must pay particular attention to this document as it contains a number of steps for you to follow that are critical to the accurate generation of your cost items.
TEAM Update 1.07
The TEAM update includes a number of useful features for the end user, including a To Do List, a Session Calendar View and Incomplete Attendance screens for locating and correcting any missing or invalid attendance information.
